It's a tie!

“The Asahi Shimbun paper has announced the winners for the 13th Annual Tezuka Osamu Cultural Prizes this weekend. For the first time, two manga titles shared the Grand Prize: Fumi Yoshinaga’s Ōoku: The Inner Chamber, and Yoshihiro Tatsumi’s A Drifting Life.”

One’s already been released in English, and the other is due out in August. Good times.

The new real

I’ve been using some various social networking platforms for my day job. I haven’t been using them very aggressively, because the platforms are free, and I’m enjoying the opportunity to see how these things evolve. How many people find them naturally, and how do they use them to meet their own needs?

(For me, there’s also a certain amount of diffidence in play. A lot of these platforms are big with people a generation younger than me. While that certainly doesn’t preclude people from other age groups from using them, I don’t want to seem like the old man showing up on the playground trying to start a kickball game, because that’s creepy. I can form theories on what people younger than me is cool, and I may well be right, but I think the chance that an incorrect surmise would backfire is a lot worse than the peril of appearing stodgy.)

This does relate to comics, I promise, specifically to the discussion of the Eisners and the possibility of a manga-centric awards program. At the Hooded Utilitarian, Noah Berlatsky expands on what Simon Jones was suggesting the other day. More accurately, he was flipping the argument and wondering if the Eisners need manga more than manga needs the Eisners:

“So you would think, maybe, that the industry might want to celebrate that. Maybe comics might want to use their awards show as a chance to point out to the world how things have changed, to embrace new readers, to paint itself as dynamic and exciting and forward looking and inclusive.”

Berlatsky’s piece is really interesting to me, and think what he says is applicable to any of what I might call the brick-and-mortar awards programs, whether they’re focused on movies or plays or books or television. They don’t evolve quickly or consistently, you know? Some years, they cast a wide net from mainstream to obscure, predictable to unexpected, and some years, they’re utterly central-casting. The Eisners seem a little more fluid, because the nominating committee changes every year. I think that’s a good thing, and I rather like that the categories can shift a bit based on what happened during the nomination period. But it doesn’t always guarantee results that are forward looking and inclusive, or at least not forward looking and inclusive in the same sense that I use those terms.

And this takes me back to those social networking platforms, which emerged very much as a way to bypass brick-and-mortar ways to find information and communicate. The brick-and-mortar outlets weren’t fluid enough and didn’t evolve fast enough to meet needs, so the audience took things into their own hands. And that’s a really good thing, in my opinion. At their best, venues like blogs and Facebook and Twitter let people cherry-pick what works for them, what’s fun and useful and informative. And if more old people are showing up with kickballs, that doesn’t mean the core audience has to listen to them.

So I think when I said that Deb Aoki’s great new best-of ballots at About.Com might need “tweaking,” it came from a misguided notion of making them more brick and mortar. Thinking more carefully about that prospect, of trying to put some kind of “official” spin on things, I’ve decided that would be counter-productive. The polls are wide-ranging and inclusive right out of the box, and I don’t think there’s any benefit to be gained from putting them behind a podium. And they will evolve with each passing year as more people hear about them and vote, because I think that’s just what happens when someone puts something good and useful on the internet.

And since everyone’s voting from home, we can all drink as much as we like with no risk of embarrassing pictures from the ceremony showing up on Flickr.

There will never be too many prizes

You know, I sometimes think I should just start a category called “I agree with Simon Jones.” This time around, he’s considering the recently announced Eisner Award nominations and the relative dearth of manga in the mix.

“Awards shows are about promoting industry and rewarding creativity, more than being the final word on objective quality with a clause about equal time. If we all want to see more manga being recognized, then the impetus is on manga industry pros and fans to create and fund our own respectable manga award. Granted, the track record on that front isn’t sterling…”

I might only add that award shows, at their most cover-the-eyes delightful, are also about mortifying dance numbers, but other than that, his sentiments did effectively preempt what would probably have been a rather half-hearted bit of snark on this year’s roster.

Okay, so the slate for Best U.S. Edition of International Material—Japan is safe as houses. It’s also unimpeachable, and I’m really happy that the committee picked Dororo instead of Black Jack for its perennial Tezuka slot. (I love Black Jack, don’t get me wrong, but I really thought Dororo just sang.) Based on the books that I’ve read and what I’ve heard of the rest, the Best Publication for Teens/Tweens slate is pretty much unimpeachable as well. (Could I fill a slate of Best U.S. Edition of International Material for Teens/Tweens—Japan? Good grief, how many slots do I have to work with?)

But really, it’s well past time there was some kind of serious, sustained annual awards program for manga. I think Deb Aoki’s polls of the best new manga titles of 2008 would be an outstanding foundation for such a program. If she can be persuaded to keep doing it year after year, they could (with periodic tweaking) really evolve into something enduring.

It'll be here before you know it

It’s never too early to start thinking about next year’s Great Graphic Novels for Teens list. The first round of nominations has been posted at the Young Adult Library Services Association’s site, and this year’s chair, Eva Volin, notes that “anyone, as long as that person isn’t the creator or publisher of the work, can nominate a title for this list. The book needs to have been originally published between September 1, 2008 and December 31, 2009.” Here’s the form, so what are you waiting for?

Now, if you’ll excuse me, I’m off to nominate Crogan’s Vengeance (Oni) before I forget.

Stuff wisely

So the Harvey Awards nomination process is underway, and creative types can make a bid to recognize their favorite peers and works in a wide variety of categories. You may remember me keening and gnashing my teeth over some of last year’s nominations.

For a change of pace, I thought I’d go the Force Works/Extreme Justice proactive route this year. Instead of recoiling in horror at the prospect of ever seeing the phrase “Harvey Award winner Witchblade Manga,” I’ve decided to take a stab at prevention. Toward that end, here are some books from 2008 that you might consider for the Best American Edition of Foreign Material category:

    At Good Comics for Kids, Snow Wildsmith rounds up graphic novels recognized on other American Library Association lists like “Best Books for Young Adults” and “Quick Picks for Reluctant Young Adult Readers.”

    One, the “Death and Dying” category in “Popular Paperbacks for Young Adults,” reminds me to ask a question: where’s Cyril Pedrosa’s Three Shadows (First Second) on any of these lists? I didn’t think it was a perfect book, but it was packed with sensitivity, ambition and craft, and it was a noble attempt at spinning a new fable.

    Del Rey has three books that catch my eye: the fifth volume of Hiro Mashima’s fun, lively Fairy Tail, the second of Miwa Ueda’s twisted-sister drama Papillion, and the sixth of Hitoshi Iwaaki’s enduringly awesome Parasyte.

    HarperCollins delivers a second printing of Paul Gravett’s excellent Graphic Novels: Everything You Need to Know. It’s a terrific overview of a medium that’s tricky to summarize. Gravett pulled off a similar trick with his essential Manga: 60 Years of Japanese Comics.

    In a similar vein, Netcomics offers Manhwa 100: The New Era for Illustrated Comics, promising a compilation that represents the Korean comic book industry.

    Tokyopop’s big offering for the week is Benjamin’s full-color manhua Orange. Brigid Alverson shared a preview at MangaBlog, and Paul Gravett recently posted an interview with the creator conducted by Rebeca Fernandez. The other highlight from Tokyopop is the fourth volume of Ai Morinaga’s Your and My Secret, gender-bending comedy at its very best.

    Greatness

    The American Library Association’s Young Adult Library Services Association has released its 2009 Great Graphic Novels for Teens list, along with the Top Ten. The group recognized 53 titles total from 27 different publishers or imprints. The big winner was Viz, with 9 titles and 23 books recognized, though if you add up the entries from all of DC’s various imprints, it comes close with 9 titles and 14 books recognized. Viz dominated the Top Ten, with 3 titles earning recognition.

    As usual, there’s a terrific breadth of material on display, from romance to biography to history mystery to super-heroes to slice-of-life to fantasy and so on. Here’s the breakdown of entries by publisher/imprint:

    Results, rewards, Re:

    Deb Aoki has begun the results phase of her annual manga polls over at About.Com, starting with 2008’s visitor-selected Best New Shojo Manga. Honestly, I’d have been happy with any of the top three claiming titles first place, as I think they’re all fine series. But there’s a lot of crack in this category, so I’m not surprised that it provided a strong slate.

    Deb also points to a contest being sponsored by Go! Comi to help introduce readers to guilty-pleasure priestess You Higuri.

    Sometimes, all it takes is a partial e-mail title to send my hopes skyrocketing out of all proportion. I open my in-box and see “Digital Manga Publishing acquires classic shojo title:”. What is it? The Rose of Versailles? The Poe Clan? Well, no, it’s Itazura Na Kiss by Kaoru Tada, which sounds like fun, but I did have a breathless moment there before I could click the message open.

    Kids' stuff

    For whatever reason, I’m really enjoying the “best of/favorite” lists from group blogs this year. Case in point: the round-up from the crew at Good Comics for Kids.

    I may not agree with every choice (Life Sucks? Seriously?), but it’s a great cross-section of different kinds of books for different age groups. And maybe it’s just me, but I often find lists focused on a younger audience full of books that could just as easily populate a general “best of/favorites” list. But that might just be me.

    And speaking of good comics for kids, I just got around to reading the second volume of Satoko Kiyuduki’s Shoulder-a-Coffin Kuro (Yen Press). What an odd, sweet, gently unsettling little book this is. I think it may need some Flipped love in the near future.
